TROUBLESHOOTING Q&A'S
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Display Adapter problems:
Q: On a 3Dfx based cards Final Reality freezed to a black screen after the
Robots test before starting City Scene.
A: You are probably using new reference drivers from 3Dfx or drivers based on
the reference drivers such as Monster3D drivers version 1.09. These drivers
do not seem to be fully compatible with the previous ones. Until a solution
is developed, please use the following drivers Final Reality has been tested
with: Diamond Monster3D version 1.08 and Orchid Righteous3D version 2.00.18
Q: On a Diamond Stealth 2000 Pro Final Reality exits after the Robots test
A: This seems to be a driver problem. Change the display type back to standard
VGA and install the display drivers that come with DirectX 5.
Q: Final Reality reports a GENERIC ERROR message on my Hercules Stingray 128/3D
My desktop is in 32-bit color mode.
A: This is a driver problem. Reduce your color depth to 16-bit and Final
Reality should work fine. Same error has been reported on Elsa Erazor
and STB Lightspeed.
Q: On PowerVR based cards Final Reality reports DDERR_OUTOFVIDEOMEMORY when
trying to run the 3D tests.
A: Your primary display adapter does not have sufficient amount of memory for
frame buffers. Lower your desktop resolution and color depth to get
Final Reality working.
Q: On PowerVR based cards polygons flicker at some points
A: This is a driver problem which has been corrected in new drivers. Download
newer drivers from your card manufacturer.
Q: On ATI Xpert@Play and Xpert@Work based cards polygons flicker at some points
A: This is a driver problem which has been corrected in new drivers. Download
newer drivers from ATI Technologies.
Q: On nVidia Riva128 based boards bilinear filtering is not on in all surfaces.
A: This seems to be a driver problem.
Q: On Hercules Stingray 128/3D Final Reality crashes after the Robots test.
I'm using driver release 1.17.
A: The newest Hercules drivers seem to have produced this new problem. Final
Reality works fine with driver version 1.07.2039 that come on the Hercules
installation CD-ROM dated August 29, 1997.
Q: I have an AGP computer and AGP display adapter but I don't get the "AGP
detected" sign at the startup-screen.
A: Install the latest certified drivers. Some beta drivers have problems
reporting their AGP capability. Some drivers might require you to
manually install an AGP patch (available from Intel). AGP also requires
Windows OSR 2.1 version (or the USBSUPP.EXE patch, available from Microsoft)
General problems:
Q: Whenever I try to display results, Final Reality crashes with an error:
"An unsupported operation was attempted"
A: Your Comctl32.dll version is too old. Download the new DLL and copy it to
your Windows/System directory. You need to restart the computer in MS-DOS
mode in order to copy the file. Alternate option is to install e.g.
Microsoft Internet Explorer 3 or 4 which also installs this DLL.
Q: Miscellaneous problems, Final Reality does not start!
A: Re-installing DirectX 5.0 can help. For example an older game might have
installed an older version of DirectX
Q: Final Reality reports Direct3D interface not found on startup but it
has worked before.
A: Direct3D hasn't been properly de-initialized or some program has
installed an older version of DirectX. Restart your computer and try
again. If necessary, re-install DirectX 5.0.
Q: Final Reality loses my Direct3D Accelerator entry from the rendering
platforms list.
A: This happens if Direct3D doesn't get properly deinitialised. Please
restart your computer to get it back.
Q: Some parts in Final Reality are too dark on my computer!
A: Try adjusting the gamma correction of your 3D card in the Display
Properties. Or turn off the lights.
Sound problems:
Q: I am able to run FR without sound but it crashes with sound.
A: Install the latest drivers for your sound card and try different kHz
and 8/16 bit modes.
Q: Sound slows down in the end of material show in my Pentium II
A: This problem seems to occur on only those computers that have a 3Dfx
card installed. Try installing your sound card drivers again.
Q: There is too much bass in the music.
A: Check your sound card and speaker treble / bass settings. Our music has
enough attititude without extra accentuations.
